The Scouts at Regal Building Materials Ltd..

Regal Building Supply Ltd. recently opened its shop doors after hours for a hands-on evening with local Scouts and it was a busy one! Members of the Scouts took part in a woodworking night designed to give them a safe, indoor space to learn, build, and try something new. This activity marked a change from their usual outdoor meetings held in the winter, to a warmer and indoor one.

Alongside four volunteers which included Regal’s team familiar with tools like bandsaws and oscillating sanding disks, the Scouts each got a woodwork kit and had the opportunity to build their own trucks and tractors. In just two hours, they completed as many as 16 projects which was an impressive turnout for one evening.

The idea came from Mike Cundy, Regal’s Sales Manager and a Scout leader for the past three years. Volunteering the space was a great way for 19 Scouts between the ages of 12-15, to gather and work on their projects. Mike is part of the Mackenzie 210 group which oversees five levels: Beavers (ages 5-7), Cubs (ages 8-10), Scouts (ages 11-14), and Venturers (ages 15-17). The group included different levels of Scouts, making the evening filled with a nice mix of ages and experience. Mike was a Scout himself, and his 12-year-old son, now at a Scout level, also joined in on the fun activity.  That connection made the night especially meaningful, and it also was easy to see why the Regal team was eager to get involved as many staff members had been Scouts themselves and were happy to share their experience with the next generation. Volunteering as a group is always an excellent way to bond with coworkers, and Regal staff were kind enough to spend their time sharing stories, interacting with kids, and are always ecstatic to join opportunities like this outside of work.

For the youth, the evening was filled with learning, creativity, and fun. Older Scouts had the chance to work more independently, while younger participants received guidance and encouragement along the way. For Regal staff, it was also a chance to connect outside of the regular workday and support an activity that continues to make an impact.

Regal Building Supply Ltd. hopes to continue hosting the event, with new ideas already underway for future sessions, including building birdhouses for Mother’s Day. If this year’s turnout is any sign, there will be plenty more projects, stories, and proud builders to come.
